Boots – made for walking
One of my favourite things is walking, and when walking is your thing, you really need to make sure that your footwear is up to it!
With Autumn/Winter fast approaching, lightweight summer footwear will need to be put aside in favour of more sturdy, water-resistant shoes or boots. For me, that means getting my trusty Meindl heavy-weights out of their storage box, giving them a fresh waxing, and giving them pride of place on my shoe-rack! These boots have looked after my ‘difficult to please’ feet for the past 10 years. They have trekked through the Himalays, summited Kilimanjaro, crossed stoney desert of Morocco, and covered hundreds of miles back here in the UK.
There is an ongoing debate on the merits of boots versus various other types of other footwear but there are several reasons that I stick to a good solid boot:
- Boots protect my tired toes from the large stones I inadvertantly kick towards the end of a long, hard day of walking.
- The soles of boots are normally thicker, protecting feet from sharp pebbles etc.
- Rising a little higher than shoes, the boots help to support my ankles when I hit uneven ground.
- The higher rise also improves water resistance, and warmth in bad weather.
- Finally, they keep my feet and ankles a little cleaner!
My trusty Meindls may be old boots now, but I hope they will carry me for many miles yet. These boots are very definitely made for walking!
